Wisconsin is dairy country, but the geography is more varied than the reputation. The Driftless Area in the southwest is unglaciated bluff country. Door County to the east is the thumb sticking into Lake Michigan with cherry orchards and ferry service. The Northwoods are 4 million acres of lake-and-forest.

Roads, food, and seasons in Wisconsin

Drive the Door County loop — WI-42 up the bay side, WI-57 down the lake side. Hit fish boils in Ellison Bay or Fish Creek (a tradition, not a kitsch), Wilson's in Ephraim for ice cream, the Cana Island Lighthouse for the photo.

Madison eating is sneaky-good. L'Etoile on the Square, Old Fashioned for Friday fish fry, Forequarter for a long bar dinner. The Dane County farmers' market is one of the best in the country.

July and August are the Door County peak — book three months out for weekends. September is nearly as good and quieter. Northwoods opens in May and closes effectively in late October when most lodges shut down.
