RV stays in Illinois
Prairie horizons, Mississippi river towns, and the underrated Shawnee country in the south.
Search IllinoisA traveler's overview
Illinois is two states. The northern half is Chicago and its commuter halo; the southern half is Shawnee National Forest, sandstone canyons, and small river towns straight out of Mark Twain. Most travelers only see the I-55 corridor and miss the rest.
CurbNTurf hosts trend rural here — farm stays in the central prairie, river-bluff pads along the Mississippi, and Shawnee-adjacent sites in the south. Spring and fall are easy; summer humidity and winter cold are both real.

Roads, food, and seasons in Illinois
Drive the Great River Road (IL-100/IL-3) along the Mississippi — Alton south to Cairo is mostly empty highway with bluff overlooks and pie diners. Northern stretches near Galena are flashier but more crowded.
Shawnee in mid-October is a sleeper destination. Garden of the Gods at sunrise, Rim Rock loop in the afternoon, and a beer in Carbondale to close it out. Hostels and small lodges fill up fast.
Pack for humidity June through August and cold rain in spring. Mosquitoes in the river bottoms are world-class; treat your gear before you go.
