Why Indiana

A traveler's overview

Indiana is flatter than its neighbors think and hillier than its reputation. The southern third is real terrain — limestone caves, Ohio River cliffs, and Hoosier National Forest. The center is corn-and-soybean farm country broken up by college towns and old courthouse squares.

CurbNTurf hosts here are mostly working farms and quiet pads in the southern hills. Cell coverage is solid; the roads are well-graded; the surprise is how empty they get on a Tuesday afternoon.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in Indiana

Drive IN-46 from Bloomington east through Brown County to Columbus. It's a good 90-minute loop with hardwood canopies, and Columbus has a surprising concentration of mid-century modern architecture worth a half-day.

Mid- to late-October is peak fall color in Brown County and gets crowded — book hosts well in advance, or come the second week of November for almost the same color and far fewer people.

Limestone caves stay 54 degrees year-round; bring a layer even in August. Spring rains can flood low river roads — the Ohio River bluffs are spectacular but the access roads can close after storms.
