Why West Virginia

A traveler's overview

West Virginia is mountains all the way through. New River Gorge became a national park in 2020 — the southern third of the state turns over to whitewater country every spring. The Allegheny highlands in the east have some of the highest elevations in the East and surprising weather year-round.

CurbNTurf hosts trend mountain — Fayetteville near the New, Davis and Thomas in the highlands, scattered farms in the eastern panhandle. Cell coverage drops fast off the interstates.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in West Virginia

Run the New River — outfitters in Fayetteville do day trips on the Lower New (April–October) and the Upper Gauley releases (six fall weekends, world-class). Long Point hike for the bridge view if you're not on the water.

Dolly Sods is the closest thing to subarctic terrain in the East — heath barrens, bog, and weather that turns on a dime. Bring layers in any season; FR-75 is the access road and it's rough.

Spring whitewater (March–May) and fall foliage (early to mid-October at high elevation, late October at lower) are the headline seasons. Mountain weather is unpredictable — check forecasts the day of, not the day before.
