Why Washington

A traveler's overview

Washington is split by the Cascades into two different climates. West-side is mossy temperate rainforest — the Olympic Peninsula, the San Juans, Puget Sound. East-side is high desert sagebrush, the Columbia Basin, and Walla Walla wine country.

CurbNTurf hosts cluster on the Olympic Peninsula, in the San Juans, and in Walla Walla. Summer (July–September) is the dry season; the rest of the year, west-side rain is the rule and east-side stays surprisingly clear.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in Washington

Drive the North Cascades Highway (WA-20) from Burlington to Winthrop — 106 miles through the most underrated national park in the country. Closes in winter; open mid-April to mid-November typically.

Walla Walla wine takes two days minimum. Cayuse, Leonetti, Woodward Canyon are reference-quality reds. Pair with Walla Walla onions and a long lunch at Saffron.

July through September is the reliable dry window everywhere. October on the east side is still beautiful and quiet. West side is rain-gear country eight months a year — embrace it or visit in summer.
