Why Oregon

A traveler's overview

Oregon's diversity is its surprise. The coast is rocky, foggy, and almost entirely public. The Willamette Valley is one of the world's great pinot noir regions. The high desert east of the Cascades is empty in the way Nevada is empty.

CurbNTurf hosts cluster in wine country (McMinnville, Dundee), Bend and the Cascades, and along the coast. Summer (July–September) is dry and reliable; winter is wet on the western side and ski-season sharp east of the crest.

A gateway to the Wallowas in the far northeast — the Alps of Oregon.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in Oregon

Drive Highway 101 from Astoria to Brookings over three days — about 360 miles, but every pull-off is worth it. Cannon Beach for the Haystack, Yachats for tide pools, Bandon for the dunes.

Willamette wine country pairs perfectly with a McMinnville base. Visit Beaux Frères, Eyrie, Domaine Drouhin in Dundee. Lunch at Hayward in McMinnville or Tina's in Dundee.

July through October is the reliable dry window. Smoke from California fires can drift north in late August; check airnow.gov. The coast stays cool — a fleece is a year-round item.
