Roads, food, and seasons in Texas
Drive US-290 from Austin to Fredericksburg — wine country with brisket-and-sausage stops in Driftwood, Lockhart (a small detour south), and Luckenbach. Plan a slow Saturday.
Big Bend takes a week minimum. Chisos Basin for the high country, Santa Elena Canyon for the river, Boquillas crossing into Mexico for the side trip. Marfa is a half-day add on the drive in or out.
Spring wildflowers (mid-March to mid-April) and fall (mid-October through November) are the comfort windows. Summer Hill Country is hot but pool-and-river country is the play. Hurricane season hits the coast June–November.
