Why New York

A traveler's overview

New York is mostly upstate. The Adirondacks are the largest park east of the Mississippi. The Finger Lakes have a serious cool-climate wine scene. The Catskills, the St. Lawrence, the Niagara frontier — there's a year of road trips here without seeing the city.

CurbNTurf hosts cluster around the Finger Lakes (Hammondsport, Geneva, Cayuga) and the Adirondacks (Lake Placid, Saranac). Summer is the season; fall foliage rolls south through October.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in New York

Tour Finger Lakes wineries by lake. Seneca and Cayuga are the biggest; Keuka has the longest history. Hermann J. Wiemer in Dundee and Ravines on Keuka are reference-quality riesling.

Adirondacks 46ers (the high peaks) are a project of a lifetime; even a single high peak — Cascade or Algonquin — is a real day. Lake Placid and Keene Valley are the basecamps.

Foliage timing: third week of September in the high Adirondacks, first week of October in the Catskills, mid-October in the Hudson Valley. Mud season hits late April–May.
