Why Maine

A traveler's overview

Maine's coast gets the postcards but it's only a thin strip. The interior is bigger than people realize — Moosehead Lake, the Allagash, Baxter State Park and Katahdin. Cell service drops fast once you leave US-1.

CurbNTurf hosts cluster around Acadia and the midcoast — Camden, Belfast, Bar Harbor — with a few inland near the lakes. Summer (July–August) is the real season; foliage in early October is the second peak. Black flies in May and June are worse than the mosquitoes.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in Maine

Drive the Park Loop Road in Acadia at sunrise — Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the lower 48 to see the sun from October through March. Then breakfast at Jordan Pond House for popovers.

Lobster shacks are a religion. Five Islands in Georgetown, Red's Eats in Wiscasset (the line is real), McLoons on Spruce Head. BYOB in most cases.

Bring layers in any season — the coast can be 60 degrees in July with fog. Inland Maine in shoulder season is muddy until late May; fall foliage peaks first in the north and rolls south through October.
