Why Colorado

A traveler's overview

Colorado is altitude. Even the prairie east of Denver sits a mile up, and the western half is one continuous range of rivers, passes, and old mining towns. Summer here is short and brilliant — wildflowers in July, aspens in late September.

CurbNTurf hosts cluster on the western slope and in the San Juans — vineyard pads in Palisade, mountain farms outside Durango, brewery stays in Steamboat Springs. Acclimate at lower elevations before pushing above 9,000 feet, and be ready for afternoon thunderstorms basically every summer day.

Things to do

Roads, food, and seasons in Colorado

Drive the San Juan Skyway — Durango to Silverton to Ouray to Telluride and back. It's 233 miles of mining-town switchbacks and is worth a full day. Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray has no guardrails, on purpose.

July wildflowers in Crested Butte are a national event. Get the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival schedule and time a visit around it. The shoulder weeks just before and after are quieter and almost as good.

Afternoon thunderstorms above treeline are not a suggestion — climb early and be off ridges by noon. Carry a layer for elevation drops; mountain mornings can be 40 degrees in August.
